The state’s older housing stockmany homes built before 1978contributes to this ongoing public health crisis, increasing the risk of lead exposure for Vermont's youngest residents.
In particular, children living in lower-income households and families in older urban communities in cities like Burlington and Rutland are disproportionately affected by lead hazards. The legislative and health infrastructure surrounding lead safety, evident in disparities among housing quality, has been a pressing barrier for vulnerable populations. Vermont’s specific geographic and demographic landscape compounds the challenge, with rural areas also lacking access to adequate health resources and information regarding lead safety interventions.
The new grant program aims to address these barriers by providing targeted lead inspection services for households with children under six.
